History On The Term
Written By Justine Rae Fernando
The word "queer" is sometimes used to characterize someone's gender identification or sexual orientation. However, this word has occasionally been used as a hurtful slur towards members of LGBTQIA+ communities. Some people could still find it insulting because of this.

Since the word "queer" was once used as a derogatory term, the celebration and use of it now are acts of reclamation. When I was growing up, the word "queer" was obviously a pejorative, according to Dr. Wise. If a person was gay or different, they were labeled as "wrong." (Schuster, E. MPH, 2022) Today, any sexual orientation or gender identity that is neither heterosexual or cisgender may be referred to as "queer" by a person. For instance, someone who identifies as queer may be lesbian, gay, asexual, or transgender. Because their sexuality or gender may be complex, fluctuate over time, or not fit into any preexisting sexual orientations or gender identities, some persons may also use the term "queer."
