According to IWGYP, 75% of LGBTQ+ youth experienced discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Discrimination is one of the factors why some experience anxiety, depression, and isolation. It can lead to people experiencing homelessness, being illegal, and attempting suicide. To avoid this, it is suggested to address issues such as discrimination, stigma, and violence, creating a safe environment and supporting families. This action can lower the rates of suicides.
Schools have a big role in gaining equality and preventing the spread of ignorance among youths. It shows and teaches students, they can control what they perceive as right and wrong, essentially molding kids into what society likes and needs. Teaching kids the issues and teaching them acceptance is the key to equality as their second home. Here lie early engagements of children with different people learning how to interact and gaining relationships. According to SafeSchool, they would feel a sense of belonging, being treated the same, and not feeling indifferent because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
